very loud explosions all around us tonight as israeli missiles land. we've also heard the distinct whoosh of outgoing rockets as hamas and other militant groups return fire. tonight, it seems this burst of violence is only getting worse. all day long, rockets filled the bright blue sky, gaza militants firing on israel. at least one rocket landed tonight in tel aviv, israel's commercial capital. sirens blared as residents hit the ground. three israelis were killed earlier when a rocket hit their apartment in the south. this as israeli warplanes pounded the gaza strip. its target? militant groups, most notably, hamas. but caught in the cross-fire, at least 12 civilians, including that 11-month-old boy. "what did my son do to die like this," his father cried. this is what the aftermath of one of these strikes looks like. a massive crater filled with cinderblock and rebar, the strong smell of diesel fuel, several of the houses around were damaged very badly. and the residents here on this street tell us they hope hamas and the other groups keep firing rockets into israel in retaliation

on new efforts to stop the deadly violence in the mideast. glad you are with us, everybody i'm jenna lee. jon: i'm jon scott. israel gears up for a ground offensive to combat the deadly hamas rocket attacks it too prefers a diplomatic solution to end the dry sis. all this as the death toll rises to nearly one hundred. israel appears to be stepping up its bombing campaign, launching air strikes at key targets in gaza, one hitting the immediate quarters of the palestinian national security forces causing a huge explosion with thick, black smoke seen over gaza city this morning. but hamas not letting up, firing hundreds and hundreds of rockets into israel over the past few days. 75 just today alone. israel's iron dome an antimissile battery intercepting 20 of them. reports today that one did hit a school in southern israel. thankfully, though, it was empty at the time. leland vittert live on the israel-gaza border for us now. leland. >> reporter: jon, we were at that school, there was no kids there, because they don't have snow days here, they have rocket days. today being one of them. behi

there and one hit just 20 yards behind us. we are heading from one location to another. you probably heard the iron dome go off. you can see people taking cover right there. in this whole key in one of these sirens is to try to find a place to lay down and tuck in, somewhere like this rock. by the time the sirens go off to the time you need to be down is just 20 or 30 seconds am we heard the impact. you can see the firefighters hosing down the car. the air raid sirens went off at 8:00 this noarpg morning. you can imagine the people in the house, in the neighborhood, having breakfast, were thinking, as they heard the sirens and then heard the explosions. right now, we're still seeing the bright orange glows from the gaza strip, the israeli airstrikes coming in. and the rockets heading out. one just headed for tel aviv, we think was intersepted by the iron dome missile defense system, which has saved countless lives here on the israeli side. there are peace talks going on right now, we are told there is an envoy in cairo, that's probably a positive sign, but prime minister netanyahu says he

to stay down actually is that that was our fred pleitgen. tell us how things have changed there. there's a new normal. >> reporter: oh, you're absolutely right. the new normal is that basically people have to live with the threat of rocket attacks the entire day. what they do is stay inside most of the day. it's interesting to see. every time people go outside they have to plan their route very carefully so they're near the vicinity of a hard shelter in skas there's another rocket attack. i can tell you this morning there's been a lot of them. i'm standing in front of those iron dome rocket intercepter batteries right now and literally about four minutes before our show it wechblt off and fired about three intercepter missiles that hit about four hamas rockets i would say about 200 yards above our head. we ourselves have been in the hardened shelter at least four time as day. so certainly it's taking a heavy toll on life. people can't get on with business. people are living in constant fear and a lot of people tell us they hope this ends soon, victor. >> let's talk about this on the bo

us ask, what is a disaster anyway? >>> good morning. i'm melissa harris perry coming to you from horockefeller city, the new york city still reeling from the effects of superstorm sandy and her landfall earlier this week. today, 2.5 million people remain without power and at least 40 new yorkers have died in the storms aftermath. almost half of those deaths were in just one of the burroughs that make up the five burroughs of new york, staten island. now, this striking image was captured by an nbc producer and staten island. sandy's wake left the debris in the backyard of john della rosa's severely smashed home. smashed plates mingled with halloween decorations. overwhelmed by the devastation, rocked by the power of the storm, he is left to pick up the pieces of the storm surge which sent more than 8 feet of water into the neighborhood. he is also left to grieve the losses of his next door neighbors, the foundation and stairs are all that remain of the dresh family home. george dresh and his 13-year-old daughter, angela died, when the storm surge came through their home. george's

with you. what can you tell us about this probe with paula broadwell. what would the fbi have been looking for, and do we know how long this was going on for? >> we don't know how long it was going on, but just the -- so they're the ones that would look into classification, they look into hold clearances. are they doing what they need to be doing to make sure that information stays safe. is there any opportunity that that information could be exploited by either a spy or anyone else who shouldn't have access to that information. so the fact they were the ones looking into this tells us they were concerned about some e-mail things. let's back up for just a moment. this was a tip given that there was a relationship going on between the two, so they would have dug into things like e-male e-mails and text and see things like that. if it turns out to be paula, they would be looking at communications between the two over the years, and especially since, as you mentioned, general david petraeus has taken over the directorship of the cia which happened in september of last year. anderson? >> and s
